Karan Nair Block 3 January 4, 2016 Importance of Diabetes This paper informs about the disease and influences diabetic patients or doctors to find a cure.  The article states the symptoms of diabetes and how to manage it.  This paper is for people who are diagnosed with diabetes, including my mother.  Diabetes is a metabolic disease where the body is unable to make insulin, causing elevated levels of glucose in the blood.  Metabolism is how we use digested food to produce growth and energy for our body (MNT 2015).  There are two metabolic processes, anabolism and catabolism.  Anabolism is the building up of complex molecules.  Diabetes is a catabolism process which is the breaking down of complex molecules.   This long term disease can make patients dehydrated and very hungry when levels of glucose are high (MNT 2015).  Diabetes patients must take glucose tablets if sugar levels are too low or must take in carbohydrates.  S...

Karan Nair Ms. Asuncion English 9H         14 February 2016 “What We Plant, We Will Eat”             “What We Plant, We Will Eat” by S.E Schlosser is a Korean folk tale.  This story is about a father passing away, telling his two sons that family means everything.  After their father’s death, the sons had disagreements.  The older son took the land he lived on for himself and left the younger son broke.  The younger son started a family and barely could manage his life.  A miracle occurred after the younger son saved a bird, and in return the bird helped him.  The younger son thrived in wealth by the gift of magic seeds.  As an affect, the older son got jealous and karma hit him by tearing down his crops and wealth.  The older son came back to the younger brother in sadness begging for acceptance and forgiveness.  The story ends the two s...
Karan Nair Ms. Asuncion English 9H January 2015 Business Letter to Ubisoft 43262 Goosefoot Sq. Ashburn, VA 20148 December 3, 2015 28 rue Armand Carrel 93108 Montreuil-sous-Bois Dear Mr. Guillemot,             All the Ubisoft games have really interested me since the beginning, from the first Monopoly game to Assassin’s Creed syndicate.  This videogame making company has really sparked my interest in videogames.  I remember getting my first game, Assassin’s Creed, on the Play Station 3.  I popped in the disc, grabbed my controller and the Ubisoft logo appeared on the screen.  Ever since then I have been closely following the Assassin’s Creed series.  Playing Altair Ibn-La’ Ahad and Ezio Auditore had been fantastic experiences for me.  Using the hidden blade and rummaging through the streets of Masyaf, Syria during the Third Crusades was very entertaining for me to experience....
Karan Nair Ms. Asuncion English 9H 3 31 September 2015 Chances “Stop!  Here, here, here!” Ben exclaimed as my Dad came to a halt at Jennifer’s house.  Ben and I stepped out of the car to arrive at her fourteenth birthday party.  We continued to wonder how we were invited to this but we were glad we were.  It was two weeks ago when Jennifer came up to our table at lunch and handed us invitations to her party.  Now here we were, I made fun of Ben for having a pink gift wrapped in paper.  He ripped it off and threw it in the thorn bushes as we entered in the backyard.  The backyard was decorated with birthday streamers.  Activities like ladder ball, volleyball, basketball and even a karaoke machine had been set up everywhere. Besides that, a zip line had ran through the backyard from tree to tree. We entered to see a girl smiling at Ben and me.  It took me a minute before I figured out it was Sarah from our gym class.  She show...
Karan Nair Ms. Asuncion English 9H 3 8 October 2015 Tournament          What are tournaments like? I have been learning karate for eight years and tournaments are one of my favorite things to attend.  They are held annually around January and lots of people attend them. The place I attend, Enshin Karate, has gone through many changes but still follows tradition.  I started karate lessons at age six in first grade and throughout the years I’ve learned a lot of lessons,  particularly patience, respecting others and good sportsman ship.  Currently I am a first degree black belt at Enshin Karate.  I have competed in five tournaments throughout my eight years.  My third one was the most intense for me.          I arrived at the Westminster Elementary School in Fairfax and knew what to expect, but still had butterflies in my stomach.  I signed in with my parents and ...

Gabrielle Buffaloe Ms. Asuncion English 9H, Block 3 9 December 2015 The Five Day             Every year, I go to a summer camp in Vermont. There are no electronics allowed there and you sleep in platform tents, which have a wooden frame and platform. There is a large tarp over the top of the frame. There are many things to do there including canoeing, swimming, sailing, archery, sports, arts and hiking. This past summer I was chosen to go on the five-day backpacking trip. Backpacking trips at the camp are normally two to three days long. There is only one five day each summer and there were only three campers chosen to go on it this summer. Those three campers were my best friend Amalia Dorion, another friend named Elizabeth Mullgrew, and me. Amalia and Elizabeth both took a while to decide whether or not to go because if they chose to go, then Elizabeth would miss the big biking trip that she wanted to go on. There’s o...

Arjun Tarafdar Ms. Asuncion English 9 Honors : Block 3 October 20th, 2015 Missed Opportunities There’s a time in our lives when we must choose how we want to look at the world, we can think about what we would’ve, could’ve, should’ve and might’ve done. But that’s not the only way, because; things are not always negative. If you look a bit on the positive side, you see not missed opportunities, but also everything you want, can and will do. So don’t just sit and regret your mistakes; turn around and look forward, take advantage of the present, or you will end up with One more missed opportunity, another wasted chance.

Innocent Flames by Sudiksha kochi

Original Poetry By: Sudiksha Kochi Date: 09/24/15 Block: 3 rd Innocent Flames Has the infinite galaxy swallowed stars into darkness? For your love has sucked my soul, my heart and left me to tears.. ripping blood like immature throwdowns in an abyss; each icicle representing a drop of love that poisons my heart. Sometimes I feel like climbing the peak of a mountain, surrounding myself with puddles of tears streaked in red kisses; losing the grip that you once stapled into my flesh, and the evil stares that burned in my mind like a torturous tyranny of charades. I wonder, do you still hold my memories like a safe box filled with gold? Or flush them down like unwanted scraps of dirt... shooting bullets of pain and misery into my heart, and spreading the face of carefree indulgence like the bystander of a crime scene. Your touch is like an enigmatic puzzle of deception, the rising sun of bloodlust... a staircase of hope and...

Underground Passage

Tasnia Chowdhury Ms Asuncion English 9H Block 3 3 February 2016 Underground Passage             I was on my way from the bus station to the main city hall on the other side of the road. The raw air was biting my cheeks, and I pulled my scarf farther up to my chin, burying my face in it while tensing my neck and shoulders, wanting to disappear into my winter coat. I quickened my pace towards the stairs leading down to the darker, but far less windy underground passage. I wanted to get home and jump into my warm bed as quickly as possible.             By the first two steps I realized I was being watched. I saw a shadow of a man who was leaning against the railing on the corner of the station. As I got closer, I could make out a blood-stained jacket, a cap casting a shadow over his face, and in his hand something swiftly reflecting in the lights from the fluorescent l...

Surviving the edge of Orlando

Tasnia Chowdhury Ms. Asuncion English 9H Block 3 6 January 2016 Surviving the edge of Orlando             “5…4…3...2…1… Rock on!” I could hear the screams and shouts in the distance as the roller coaster roared by at a terrifying speed. I’ve never been scared of roller coasters before but when I saw how fast this roller coaster launched, my heart was pacing very fast. I guess its name “Rock n’ Roller Coaster” suited its rapid speed. As I sat down in the seat of the roller coaster, all I could think was how I ended up here, and now all I wanted was for this ride to end.  Fears however did not have time to fill up in my mind as the roller coaster started to slow down as quickly as it took off at launch. Then I opened my eyes and all I could see were stop signs, colorful bright Hollywood signs and the screams began to fade away. My cousins started laughing and I was so relieved that I survived the ride. I then realized ...
