Personal Narrative

Liam Vereb Ms. Asuncion English 9 Honors, Block 2 13 January 2016 Conquering The Double Diamond “Wakeup! We’re going to be late,” shouted my sister as she jumped up and down on my bed. I sprang up out of my bed, showered, threw on my ski clothes and ran downstairs to join my family for breakfast. No trouble getting out of bed today as this was the day I would ski my first Black Run. I helped my father load the last of our bags into the back of the car, double-checked with mom that we had everything, and then we were off on our three-hour journey to the ski resort. "Look there it is," my sister said, pointing at the massive mountains that rose up above the clouds. Finally, after an exhausting three-hour drive we had arrived at the ski resort. Since we had been through the ticketing system before, we decided to divide and conquer. My mom and I would go and get in the line for the ski rentals while my dad and my sister would get us lockers. We would rendezvous in

What is Divergent?

Arabella Chiang Asuncion English 9H 16 February 2016 What is Divergent?             Divergent is the tendency to be different. In the book Divergent , Veronica Roth portrays the main character or protagonist Beatrice to be a Divergent. In this utopian-like society it was split into five factions: Dauntless, Abnegation, Candor, Amity, and Erudite. In each fraction they value a certain virtue. In Dauntless they would value bravery. In Abnegation they would value selflessness. In Candor they would value honesty. In Amity they would value peacefulness. In Erudite they would value knowledge (Roth 52). Beatrice grew up in the faction Abnegation, and she always thought she didn’t fit in. At the age 16 they were allowed to choose which faction they wanted to be in for the rest of their lives. They would take aptitude tests to see which faction was more suitable for them. Beatrice ended up with three results: Dauntless, Abnegation, and Erudite. She was different than the others. She

My Days as a Swimmer

Arabella Chiang Ms. Asuncion English 9H 1 October 2015 My Days as a Swimmer Everyday would start the same, my mom coming into my room screaming at me to get up. I would roll out of bed and run downstairs to stuff my face with food, then hurry to go get dressed in my purple and black swimsuit. I’d stuff my legs into the holes and pulled it up to get my arms through to get dressed, and ready to go. My dad would always nag when I put on sunscreen in the house because I liked to use the spray bottle kind and it would get everywhere. This meant that I had to go outside to put on sunscreen, and it became annoying because it was always extremely cold in the mornings. After getting myself ready, I would ask my dad to drive me to practice because it was on his way to work. Practices were always boring. All you do is swim lap after lap after lap. I thought the best part about swim team was the meets on Saturday mornings, even though sometimes I would have to get up at five in the mo

Abolish Animal Abuse

Arabella Chiang Asuncion English 9H 5 January 2016 Abolish Animal Abuse Why would you want to hurt animals? They would never hurt you. Abusing an animal is a cruel thing to do. Reporting an injured dog you see on the road may save its life. There are facilities that can help these animals. Most animals are abused in their own households, by their owners. These owners may not just stop at the animal; many animal abusers also abuse their children or even their spouses. Physical abuse is not the only thing that animals suffer from. Several animals are also used for drug testing. The cruelty does not end here.  Animal owners often place their pets in a blood sport for their own entertainment and monetary gain. Doing something like this is absolutely despicable. Abusing animals is not any better than using animals as test subjects, and making animals fight each other is even worse. Abusing animals is a horrible thing to do. In many households there are several types of abuse. W

Business Letter to Abercrombie

Arabella Chiang Ms. Asuncion English 9H 20 November 2015 Business Letter to Abercrombie 22961 Carters Station Ct. Ashburn, VA 20148 November 20, 2015 6301 Fitch Path   New Albany, OH 43054 Dear Mr. Martinez, These past few years I have loved shopping at your clothing store Abercrombie. This is one of the stores everyone around my age goes to shop. All the clothes that are sold here are very fashionable and pleasing to the eye. Many of the clothes that I bought are all very durable and the quality of the cloth is nice. These are all many reasons why teens love buying clothes at Abercrombie. The clothes are trendy, nice, and comfortable to wear. Everyone wants to have some of these clothes. Even though the clothes are nice, there are only certain amounts of sizes that can fit certain types of people. There might be people who are larger than others and want to buy these clothes, but they can’t because there are no sizes that can fit them. That isn’t fa

Meeting Strangers

Arabella Chiang Ms. Asuncion English 9H 11 December 2015 Meeting Strangers             Finally, it’s the last day of high school. Ava, my best friend, came to pick me up in her beat-up Toyota. We blasted our favorite song, “Hello” by Adele and sang to it at the top of our lungs. The day went by so quickly that I was even kind of sad that I was never going to come back next year. This day was a new beginning of our lives. Tomorrow, my friend and I are going on a road trip we have had planned for years. We decided we wanted to travel across the country and stop at places we see along the way. The first place we stopped at was King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania. We shopped until there was no more room in the trunk. The mall was humongous. We met a pair of identical twins there. One was named Corey and the other Carter. They both had luscious blond hair and bright blue eyes, but it was easy to tell them apart since one had a tattoo on his wrist. Corey was more reserved and

It's Time to Come Out

Arabella Chiang Ms. Asuncion English 9H 20 October 2015 It’s Time to Come Out One can say they don’t have any feelings,  but we all know that is a complete lie. Every night we all look at the ceiling,  and think to ourselves and sometimes cry.  Many things begin to run through our minds. We have to face our fears and our thoughts,  let them out, don’t let them be confined. Confining them will make us more distraught,  open up our walls and let someone in. Allow them to help us become better. Be a greater person than we have been. If it makes it better, write them letters. Become a butterfly and spread our wings, come out of the dark light for better things.

All the Beautiful Seasons

Celine Nguyen Ms. Asuncion English 9 Honors, Block 6 2 October 2015 All the Beautiful Seasons There are four seasons in a year With many things that are so dear Like flowers, animals, and Christmas trees And like spending time with your families In winter, we sing carols and have snowball fights We drink hot chocolate and hang up Christmas lights We also open presents from family and friends And we always think that the fun in winter never ends In spring, the warm days have finally come All the bees and birds like to buzz and hum The flowers are blooming and the animals are out of hibernation The students are excited to almost be on vacation In summer, there is no homework and no school The children play on beaches and also in the pool Everyone eats ice cream and has a lot of fun But, we all are sad when summer is almost done In autumn, all the leaves are no longer green They turn red, orange, and yellow and it's almost Halloween

Hope Is Always Here

Celine Nguyen Ms. Asuncion English 9 Honors, Block 6 20 November 2015 Hope Is Always Here              In your life, there are some good days and there are some bad days. You might have a day when something amazing has happened to you and you jump for joy. You might have a day when something bad unexpectedly slaps you across the face. You might feel like you can't handle what has happened to you and you start to lose hope. To everyone who has lost hope, I am here to tell you that you will have hope again.              In the book Hope Was Here , Joan Bauer writes about a girl who gives hope to people. Hope Yancey is sixteen years old and she works as a waitress at a restaurant every time she moves to a new place. She lives with her aunt, Addie, who is a cook. Hope has been through a lot in her life and she has a lot going on in her life. When she was a baby, she was born too early and too small. She has attended six different schools and has lived in fi

Technology Has Affected Our Lives

Celine Nguyen Ms. Asuncion English 9 Honors, Block 6 25 February 2016 Technology Has Affected Our Lives        Technology is a part of our lives. It has helped us with communication, transportation, education, and  many more. We have faster communication through phone calls, emails, texts, and facetime. Cars, trains,  and airplanes transport us faster than walking. Computers and iPads have helped students in school learn  something new in a fun way. Technology has helped us a lot, but it has also affected our lives in a negative  way.        Texting is a fast way to communicate. 91 percent of adults (Rainie paragraph 1) and 78 percent of   teens own a cell phone (Rainie paragraph 5). We text our friends and family to ask questions or just for fun.  Americans between the ages of 18 to 29 send and receive about 88 text messages every day (Kluger  paragraph 5). Texting has caused some people to not engage in a face to face conversation. They may have  trouble

Books Over You

You call me weird, you call me crazy,   You say that I'm a mess.   That books have changed me, but not for good,   That I've become obsessed.   I stay in my room, wrapped in a blanket,   Reading a really good book.   You say books are stupid, that they are dumb,    But you haven't even had a look.   I'm antisocial, a loner you say,   I never spend any time with you.   You say you're my friend, my best friend,    But the distance between us grew.    You tell me that you know me,    That you will always be there,   But you were never there when I needed you,    Never there, I swear.   Where were you when I needed you,   When my days were bad.   Books were there when I needed a friend,    Or if I was just sad.    Books taught me many things,   I don't just learn in school.   They taught me to be strong, be wise, and be brave   And that being me was bett
