All Summer in a Day: Epilogue
The year following the last sun sighting on Venus, the kids had been in a deep depression. They would walk around with no skip in their step and no inflection in their words. Deep into their eyes you could see the hurt they were feeling.
They walked into the dull, gloomy classroom for another day of a boring lesson. However when they sat down they hear a scream in the hallway and footsteps running down the hall. Their teacher comes barreling in.
“I have good news everyone!” she shouted. The kids blinked back at her unamused. “Come on aren’t you guys a little bit interested?” The kids sat in silence.
“Well,” the teacher continues, “I spoke with the principal and told him how sad you guys have been ever since the sun went back behind the clouds.” The room was so silent you could hear the pitter patter of the rain hitting the roof. “Anyways, he agreed when I said to him that we need to do something about it. I suggested a field trip to Earth. It took him longer than I expected but he agreed!”
The children’s jaws dropped. They stared at her in disbelief. Then there was a knock on the door and the teacher let in Margot. She sluggishly walked in and sat down at her seat, oblivious to the good news.
“Margot! Margot!” William shouted. “We’re going to Earth!”
Margot looks at him, “Not funny, William!” she shouted. “Don’t you have something better to do?”
“Margot calm down,” the teacher said, “William isn’t wrong. We are going on a field trip to earth.”
Margot stands up, “What? Earth? When? How long?” she said overwhelmed with joy.
“The principal would only allow a week at the most,” the teacher told the class. “We leave tomorrow morning!” The bell rang and the class ran home to pack for their big day tomorrow.
The Margot and the kids came to the school the next morning their bags heavy and their brains full of high expectations. There was a sign on the door telling them to meet the teacher at the courtyard. So Margot and the kids rushed to the courtyard and saw the teacher standing in front of a space shuttle. Margot paused to take in the huge flying craft but no sooner then she stopped, she sprinted over to the teacher. The teacher waited for the rest of the eager students to trickle in. One by one each student came in with big grins on their faces.
The moment all the kids were there, the teacher gave Margot and all the rest of the students space suits and went over the basic rules of space travel. Margot couldn’t wait any longer, she ran into the rocket and the kids followed.
“Five…four…three…two…one! Blast off!” everyone shouted in unison. It took two days and eight hours to reach Earth but all went well. The kids eagerly watched out the window and waited for Earth to come into vision.
Thud! The spaceship hit the ground with a big bang. It scared Margot at first but then she looked out the window and saw the rays of sun shining down on the green grass. Margot unbuckled her seatbelt, ran to the door and waited for the pilot to let them out. He typed a passcode into the keypad and a wall of clean air rushed in as the door opened. Margot took a deep breath and ran out. She looked around and saw a green grass and tall trees. Creatures of all kinds roamed around. She looked up and saw a bright yellow, glowing fire in the sky, just like she remembered. She was glad to be home.
