Why Should You Eat Organic?
In the age of obesity, health fads, and exercise trends, there is one thing that should be a constant and that is organic foods. Organic foods are not only better for your body and healthier than conventional foods, but they also keep you from the usual poisons used in commercially grown food, and help preserve the environment.
Organic foods are better for your body because they contain more nutrition, taste better, and avoid genetically modified organisms (GMO). These organic foods contain more nutrients than commercially grown food. The soil of organic food is better managed and nourished with responsible standards using sustainable practices. A study done by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine compared organically and conventionally grown fruits vegetables and grains. They found significantly more nutrients in the organically grown foods. Organic foods also generally taste better due to the nourished and healthy soil they are grown in. GMO’s are also quite bad for us, are contaminating a lot of food supply. Organic foods however, cannot be genetically modified, making it safer to eat than conventionally grown food.
Another big problem that is avoided when eating organic is consuming raw hormones, antibiotics, and drugs. These substances are commonly found in conventionally raised meat, dairy, and fish. In fact, about 90% of pesticides consumed by Americans are in the fat and tissue
of non-organic meat, dairy, and fish. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reported that the majority of this pesticide intake comes from these animals because they are high up on the food chain. Also, drugs, growth hormones, and antibiotics are directly put into non-organic dairy and meat products. This is because tens of millions of pounds of the drugs, growth hormones, and antibiotics ate put into animal feed each year. Scientists estimate that 70% antibiotics in the United States are used on healthy animals. In fact, when any sex or growth hormones are given to cows to artificially increase their meat and dairy output, it cannot be broken down at all, meaning people eating non-organic dairy and meat are directly consuming these hormones. All of this can be avoided when you organic, and you definitely should.
Another benefit of organic food is that it preserves ecosystems and is better for our environment, which we desperately need to keep healthy. The pesticides used in non-organic foods contaminate our water, also destroy valuable farmland. “According to Cornell entomologist David Pimental, it is estimated that only 0.1% applied pesticides reach the target pests. The bulk of pesticides (99.%) is left to impact the environment. (Loux, Top 10 Reasons To Go Organic)” So eating organic not only helps you, but also helps our environment.
Finally, buying organic also supports farming directly, and in most cases local farms. In conclusion, the benefits of organic food outweigh the benefits of conventionally grown foods in a land slide. Better for you, the environment, not to mention better taste and no GMO’s, organic foods are definitely the best option. Preserve our ecosystems and create a sustainable future by eating organic!
