Should College Athletes Get Paid
For a long time, there
has been an argument about whether college athletes should be paid or not. Some
people say it is a job to play sports in college and others say it is a
privilege. In my opinion, athletes should be compensated for playing sports
throughout college. They are involved in a market that generates hundreds of
millions of dollars, and they get none of it (nytimes.com).
There have been many
instances of student-athletes wanting to get paid. The most noteworthy of which
is the Northwestern University football team. The players believe that they are
employees of the University based on the definition provided by the National
Labor Relations Board in Chicago (elonpendulum.com). The players do technically
fit this definition of an employee based on the time and work they put in every
week and the revenue generated for the school. I agree with the players that
since they generated all of the profit, don’t they deserve to get some?
Also, many former NCAA
athletes believe current college players should be paid. Former NCAA basketball
player Shane Battier thinks that athletes should be compensated for all of
their time and hard work (Strachan). He said that not getting paid in college
made it difficult to do everyday things that his friend or family wanted to do
with him. As a former collegiate athlete and professional basketball player,
Battier has a lot of credibility on the subject. Battier, along with many
others, believes that playing college sports really is a full-time job and we
should find a way to compensate the players for it.
Another reason why the
NCAA doesn’t pay athletes is that most schools report to have barely broken
even after covering the costs of all the sports programs even with the massive
amounts of money generated. While this seems like a good reason not to pay
athletes, many financial experts believe that it would be extremely easy for
the NCAA to pay the athletes. I believe that paying the athletes is one of the
most important things for the NCAA to focus on right now and a lot of people
would be happier if they did.
