Reader Response to Ready Player One

Ready Player One is an action adventure book, centered on eighties pop culture. Taking place in a distant future where everyone spends all of their time in a virtual reality call the oasis, if they can help it. The world is so taken by poverty that people starve in the streets and entire cities are constructed of welded together mobile homes in massive towers. The main character is a teenaged boy who attends school on a government provided VR rig, and spends all of his free time researching in an attempt to fulfill the quest written in the creator of the oasis’s will, that the one who can find all three “Easter Eggs” will receive his fortune. Working alongside two other much better equipped players he has nothing but his extensive knowledge of trivia to aid him in his quest to reach the will before the creator’s business competitors can get it first.

The overall feel of the book is very lighthearted with deeper moments, drama and comedy in equal balance. I frequently found myself laughing loudly and uncontrollably, just as often as I shushed those sitting near so that I could fully immerse in an intense scene.
