Technology Has Affected Our Lives

Technology is a part of our lives. It has helped us with communication, transportation, education, and
many more. We have faster communication through phone calls, emails, texts, and facetime. Cars, trains,
and airplanes transport us faster than walking. Computers and iPads have helped students in school learn
something new in a fun way. Technology has helped us a lot, but it has also affected our lives in a negative
way.
Texting is a fast way to communicate. 91 percent of adults (Rainie paragraph 1) and 78 percent of
teens own a cell phone (Rainie paragraph 5). We text our friends and family to ask questions or just for fun.
Americans between the ages of 18 to 29 send and receive about 88 text messages every day (Kluger
paragraph 5). Texting has caused some people to not engage in a face to face conversation. They may have
trouble speaking in front of others because they are used to communicating without body language and voice
(Storm paragraph 2). Children who are over using technology such as video games may have trouble
forming their emotional reactions and developing their social skills (DeLoatch paragraph 4). It is important to
have a conversation face to face with someone because that helps you improve in reading body language
and social cues or signals. It also leads to a better relationship. Sherry Turkle, a psychologist, believes that
having a conversation with others teaches you how to talk with yourself. It teaches you to think, understand,
and reflect on yourself (Kluger paragraph 6).
Our technology is harming the environment. We remove fossil fuels from the earth to make our cars run,
for powering our homes, computers, cell phones, TV, and many more (Green Garage paragraph 8). When
we convert fuel into energy, toxic fumes are being released into the air. Fertilizer contains nitrogen and
phosphorous and they are being carried into the oceans. Our air and oceans are being polluted (Green
Garage paragraph 8). We are tearing down trees and forests around us to build more towns and cities. In
those towns and cities, we use more fossil fuels and we pollute our air even more (Green Garage paragraph
8).
Technology makes us lazy. Instead of being active and going outside, children are watching TV and
playing video games indoors. This may lead to laziness, which leads to inactivity, which leads to obesity
and/or depression (Green Garage paragraph 9). About 2.8 million people around the world die every year
because of obesity (Ellis paragraph 7). Children or teens who are continuously on their cell phones or any
kind of technology can get addicted too. When their technology is taken away, they can become restless
(Green Garage paragraph 13). Over use of the thumb when playing video games or texting may also lead to
tendonitis (Green Garage paragraph 12).
These are some ways technology affects us in a negative way. I believe we can fix some of the
problems by improving the use of technology. We can create more electrical cars and use more solar power
to save our fossil fuels. Instead of checking our social medias at lunch, we could start a fun conversation
with our friends. There are so many things we can do without technology and we can still have fun.
