Importance of Diabetes
This
paper informs about the disease and influences diabetic patients or doctors to
find a cure. The article states the
symptoms of diabetes and how to manage it.
This paper is for people who are diagnosed with diabetes, including my
mother. Diabetes is a metabolic disease
where the body is unable to make insulin, causing elevated levels of glucose in
the blood. Metabolism is how we use
digested food to produce growth and energy for our body (MNT 2015). There are two metabolic processes, anabolism
and catabolism. Anabolism is the
building up of complex molecules. Diabetes
is a catabolism process which is the breaking down of complex molecules. This
long term disease can make patients dehydrated and very hungry when levels of
glucose are high (MNT 2015). Diabetes
patients must take glucose tablets if sugar levels are too low or must take in
carbohydrates. Some of the symptoms of
the disease include blurred vision, weight loss, hyper ventilation, nausea,
vomiting, abdominal pain.
There
are two categories of diabetes, type one and type two diabetes. Type one diabetes is 10% common worldwide (MNT
2015), unfortunately my mother has it.
Type one diabetes is where insulin isn’t produced by the pancreas in the
body. People with type one diabetes can
still live a simple life, as long as they take insulin injections and maintain
a good diet. I often watch my mother
inject herself with insulin and maintain her blood sugar by testing blood on a
monitor. Type two diabetes occurs when the
body is insulin resistant. This category
of diabetes is 90% common in patients (MNT 2015). Although type two diabetes cannot be
contained, it can be managed by exercising and losing weight. Anyone obese or overweight has an increased
chance of getting diabetes (MNT 2015).
Famous actor, Tom Hanks has type two diabetes and has a good workout
regimen to contain the disease. Diabetic
patients have to watch their carbohydrate intakes with each meal. Carbohydrates consist of small sugar
molecules as well as large sugar molecules.
An example of carbohydrates is glucose.
All of our food consists of glucose (MNT 2015). Insulin has to be in the body when we take in
glucose. The pancreas produces the
hormone called insulin (MNT 2015). With
low insulin, the glucose in the carbohydrates does not get processed by the
body. Patients of type 2 diabetes can
reverse the disease by excising and managing a better diet. However, type one diabetes is not reversible.
In
recent years, doctors have developed the idea of using artificial pancreas to
produce insulin. If such a mechanism
were to be successfully created, it could be implanted in the body of a
diabetic patient. The artificial
pancreas may lead to a possible cure for diabetes. This informational article can influence many
others to find a cure to this tragic disease.
Overall, diabetes is a long term disease without a cure. However, with
further studies and experiments, it can hopefully be cured.
