Taking Innocent Lives
Taking
Innocent Lives
Globally, abortion claims two billion lives each year and
has cost the world untold value in the loss of scientist, artists, educators
and others who may have contributed to the cause of humanity. Abortion is
defined in several ways all of which stop a pregnancy, which is senseless when
adoption is a much better option for anyone in an unwanted pregnancy. That
child may be a burden to you but to someone else, it is a blessing and miracle
especially to those who can’t have children of their own. That is why one of
the main features of Christianity teachings is its emphasis on human life that
is valuable and should be protected at every stage. Abortion will always be a
controversial topic in which everyone will agree on. In the middle of a
controversy, two groups will come on the scene. They are referred to as
pro-life and pro-choice.
Pro-life supporters claim that life begins at conception,
therefore, abortion at any stage in the pregnancy is murder. They believe that
life is valuable and an unborn baby has the same rights as the mother. On the
other hand, pro-choice supporters claim that it is the women’s right to choose
what she does with her body. These pro-abortionists claim that
anti-abortionists are against the right of women and free choice rather than
the termination of the fetus (Head,1). I am for the rights of women and believe
that they should have control over their body but, I am also for the rights of an
unborn baby and believe that they should have the chance to live a full life. 96%
of pro-life are Christians and since abortion is meant to end the life of a
child, Christians regard it as a moral disorder.
Religion plays a significant role in abortion. In Psalm
chapter 139 and verse 13 it says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me
together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm, 106). This verse is from the point view
of a psalmist, David, who is talking to God. David was a man after God’s own
heart, therefore can be inferred to have had a lot of God’s wisdom and
understanding. David points out that God created us and knew everything about
us from the time we were in our mother’s womb. Also in Jeremiah chapter 29
verse 11 it says, “For I know the thoughts I have for you” declares the lord, “plans
to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah,
65). Therefore, God has a plan for that infant from the time it is conceived.
In Exodus chapter twenty verse thirteen it states, “You shall not murder.” This
verse includes a fetus. There are other options women can consider. For
instant, adoption is a wonderful choice because it takes the baby off your
hands and gives it to someone who will love it and care for it.
While adoption and abortion are both difficult choices,
women think abortion will be the easiest and quickest solution to their
unplanned pregnancy. One reason they do not consider adoption is simply because
they do not understand all the facts. Today’s adoptions are much different from
those in the past. If you choose adoption, you are in control of the adoption
process and get to choose the adoptive family who will raise your child. You
will receive yearly pictures and letters from your child and may even maintain
a relation with the family and your child (Brannagan,1). Although adoptive
parents may not have a biological connection with the child, they are capable
of raising a baby and providing loving care. Many adopted children grow up with
the understanding that they were loved enough by their biological mother to be
given to adoptive parents. While abortion is final, adoption is just the
beginning.
The topic of abortion gives rise to moral objectives
based on a fetus’s right to life. While an expecting mother may not be in the
best position to raise a child, it is questionable whether the death of that
unborn child is a justifiable solution to the problem. Although an abortion may
be necessary to save the life of an expectant mother in some situations, one
may argue that abortion should not be an escape route for those who have failed
to take responsibility with regards to suitable protection from unwanted
pregnancies.
